Universities will hire experts as professors at 10%; Diploma, Non-Compulsory Publications

New Delhi: Universities and higher education institutions will now be able to hire distinguished experts as faculty members under the Teachers of Practice (PoP) in the category of universities and colleges for which formal academic qualification and publication requirements will not be mandatory, reports the PTI news agency. In accordance with the new directives notified by the University Scholarship Commission (UGC) on Friday, experts from fields such as engineering, science, media, literature, entrepreneurship, social sciences, fine arts, civil service and the armed forces, among others, can be hired in this category.Read also – 25% more places will be created for foreign students in universities and higher education establishments: new directives from the UGC

CHECK PRACTICE TEACHERS ELIGIBILITY

Those with proven expertise in their specific profession or role with at least 15 years of service or experience, preferably at a senior level, will be eligible for practice faculty. A formal academic qualification is not considered essential for this position if they have exemplary professional practice instead, read the guidelines. WHAT ARE TEACHERS OF PRACTICE (PoP)

  1. PoP is a common practice around the world. POPs, who are mostly non-tenured professors, are in vogue at many universities such as Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), Harvard University, Stanford University, SOAS University of London, Cornell University and the University of Helsinki to name a few. .
  2. Also in India, PoPs are appointed at the Indian Institutes of Technology in Delhi, Madras and Guwahati. According to the guidelines, the number of PoPs in a higher education institution (HEI), at any time, must not exceed 10% of sanctioned positions and be engaged in three industry-funded categories, funded by HEIs from from their own resources and on an honorary basis.

The maximum length of service in a given institution should not exceed three years, extendable by one year in exceptional cases, according to the guidelines. Faculty members under the program will be engaged in three categories: industry-funded practice faculty, practice faculty engaged by HEIs from their own resources, and honorary practice faculty. The appointment of the practical teachers will be for a fixed period. Their hiring will be exclusive of university or college sanctioned positions. This will not affect the number of sanctioned positions and the recruitment of regular faculty members. The program will not be open to teachers, whether serving or retired, read the guidelines.
