Udinese goalkeeper urges Cristiano Ronaldo to sign for his club

Former Leeds United goalkeeper Marco Silvestri has urged Manchester United striker Cristiano Ronaldo to join Udinese.

The 37-year-old intended to leave the Red Devils during the summer transfer window and join a Champions League club.

However, agent Jorge Mendes was unable to arrange a transfer for the five-time Ballon d’Or winner and Ronaldo will stay at Old Trafford until at least January.

As the Champions League’s all-time top scorer and leader in appearances, United’s number seven was hoping to maintain his lead over long-time rival Lionel Messi.

But the Portuguese great is instead measuring up in the Europa League, and he scored the first goal in the competition’s history after netting a penalty in the 2-0 win over Sheriff Tiraspol, which was the 699th career goal of the former Juventus player.

Starting in Moldova meant that Ronaldo started consecutive games under Ten Hag for the first time.

Having not been part of United’s pre-season tour with personal reasons cited as the reason for Ronaldo’s absence, the former Ajax manager has consistently stressed that the Portugal national team captain had to improve his physical condition.

With both Anthony Martial and Marcus Rashford injured, Ronaldo’s departure was a relatively easy decision for the Dutchman to make.

But if Martial and Rashford, or even either, are fit enough to return for the trip to Manchester City on October 2, Ronaldo could return to the bench where he started the last four Premier League games.

Returning to Manchester United for the second time last August, Ronaldo’s contract expires in June, although the club have the option of extending his contract for a further 12 months.

After spending three seasons in Serie A with Juventus, Udinese goalkeeper Silvestri has publicly urged Ronaldo to join him at the Dacia Arena.

Joining his time with the Old Lady, Ronaldo scored three times against Silvestri, when the goalscorer was at Verona, and played his final game for Juventus against Silvestri’s Udinese before returning to Old Trafford.

Udinese, who finished 12th last season, currently sit third in Serie A, one point off the top, with 16 points from seven games and have already beaten AS Roma and Inter Milan this season.
