President Joe Biden announced on August 24 that the United States would forgive up to $10,000 in student loan debt for non-Pell grant recipients earning less than $125,000 a year. The White House said the move was intended to “address the burden of rising college costs,” especially for families.
College graduates tend to earn much higher wages than workers with no more than a high school diploma. The median annual salary for workers with a bachelor’s degree was nearly $70,000 in 2021, compared to a median of $42,068 for workers with a high school education without college, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics. Yet most Americans are dropping out of college and jumping into the job market. There are dozens of jobs in the United States with an average annual salary of over $70,000 that generally do not require a college degree as a prerequisite for employment, including a handful whose average salary exceeds $100,000. .
To determine the highest-paying jobs you can get without a college degree, 24/7 Wall St. looked at detailed occupation data from the BLS’s May 2021 Employment and Wage Statistics Program.
We’ve categorized jobs that the BLS says generally require a high school diploma or equivalent, a non-degree post-secondary degree, some college education but no degree, or no formal education degree by of their median income. We did not consider occupations classified as “miscellaneous” and “all others” by the BLS.
While the jobs on this list don’t require a college degree, potential workers generally need some type of certification, related work experience, or on-the-job training from the candidates for most of these professions.
The highest-paying jobs that don’t require a college degree pay so well, in many cases, because they’re essential – transporting people, goods, or services; provide energy; or help keep people safe. Although these jobs are important, they are often stressful and sometimes very dangerous. These are the most dangerous jobs in America.
