Super lightweight 270 degree hardtop awning: Roofnest Litewing awning unveiled

Less weight on your roof is always a good idea. And if you want a big awning, things can get heavy quickly. Roofnest has the answer in their new 270-degree, 30-pound, rigid Litewing awning.

Roofnest’s new Litewing awning opens into a 270 degree wing in just 90 seconds. What really makes it special, however, is the company’s extensive use of carbon fiber. The use of composite material and other lightweight materials reduces the Litewing’s weight, keeping the whole package down to just 30 pounds.

Roof-mounted wing-opening canopies can tip the scales at 70 pounds or more. Nest on the roof CEO Bob Africa said: “We understand that not every customer can fit a 70lb awning to their car. We created Litewing for these campers.

Using carbon fiber for the Litewing’s spoke arms and other hard parts helps reduce frame weight compared to steel or even aluminum arms. The hard parts that aren’t made from the high-tech composite are made from what Roofnest calls “aircraft-grade” aluminum.

At 30 pounds, hoisting it to the top of your truck or SUV is a whole lot easier than with a standard awning. It also makes it easier to remove the awning from your roof bars when not in use. This gives you more flexibility for roof storage or allows you to remove racks and crossbars to reduce wind noise during everyday riding.

However, perhaps the biggest advantage of the low weight is that it allows you not to exceed the load capacity of the roof when you are also transporting things like rooftop tentsbicycles, kayaksetc

Material choices reduce weight while adding strength and rigidity to the open canopy. An aluminum exoskeleton helps protect the canopy’s internal components, so you don’t sacrifice durability for weight.

The standard size Litewing gives you up to 70 square feet of awning coverage and it can deploy in just 90 seconds. The awning works great on its own in most weather conditions to save you installation time on site.

Should the weather deteriorate, the Litewing has built-in support poles. Put them down and you’re ready for tougher conditions.

For more coverage, the Litewing XL gives you up to 100 square feet of coverage. It’s a bit heavier but still only tips the scales at 40 pounds.

Roofnest claims the awning coverage makes it one of the most aerodynamic awnings in the segment. It’s no coincidence: the company announced earlier this year that the next generation of Roofnest products will be optimized for electric vehicleswhere aerodynamics play a big role in the range you get.

“Weight and wind resistance are determining factors for owners of electric vehicles. The Litewing awning provides campers with ample sun and rain protection without sacrificing efficiency, making it an ideal choice for EVs,” said Roofnest engineering manager Turner Sessions.

The textile part of the awning is made of 210 denier nylon with a black UV coating. This thickness balances the need for strength and waterproofing while staying on target and keeping the weight of the canopy as low as possible.

The Litewing can be mounted on factory crossbars and aftermarket racks and platforms. This includes all Roofnest tents featuring the brand’s dual outdoor accessory channels to give you extra flexibility when camping.

Roofnest offers the Litewing awning for $1,295 or size XL for $100 more. Both sizes are offered in driver-side and passenger-side mounting configurations. Shipping is expected to begin in late October, but pre-orders are open now.
