Storylines and Brodosplit Shipyard Sign Shipbuilding Contract for World’s First Environmentally Sustainable Residential Community at Sea

Storylines Residential Vessels and Brodosplit Shipyard in Split, Croatia have signed a construction contract to build the world’s first environmentally sustainable private residential vessel. Brodosplit, part of the DIV Group, has begun the engineering phase of the 753ft (229m) passenger vessel with 547 private residences on board. The vessel, dubbed MV Narrative, is the first residential vessel powered by liquefied natural gas (LNG) propulsion.

“We are delighted to partner with such a reputable European shipyard with a long history of delivering high quality passenger vessels,” said Storylines CEO Alister Punton. “Our resident owners can’t wait to board the state-of-the-art vessel so they can travel the world from the comfort of their own homes.”

The ship is different from a vacation cruise ship in that it is purposely built for residential living at sea. It is intended to be a floating community and includes a post office, school, library, hospital, a bank, swimming pools, offices and 20 restaurants and bars. It has the largest wellness center at sea with an area of 10,000 square feet for the spa, gym and anti-aging clinic. The ship’s amenities also include a waterfront marina with jet skis, a bowling alley, a hydroponic garden farm, and an outdoor fitness deck with racquet sports, a yoga deck, and a racetrack.

• Total project revenue valued at US$1.5 billion
• Delivery 2025
• 547 residences
• Fueled by liquefied natural gas (LNG)
• The most environmentally friendly passenger ship in the world

LNG is the greenest option currently available to power ships. Other onboard initiatives include converting waste to energy and growing produce in the solar-powered hydroponic garden. A one-of-a-kind Zero Waste Farmer’s Market will also be available with local produce where everything is compostable or recyclable.

“We are excited to build this innovative vessel with Storylines,” said Brodosplit Chairman of the Board, Tomislav Debeljak. “We always enter into projects that bring development to the industry and include new technologies. This vessel is equipped with various energy saving features, dual fuel engines (oil and LNG) and will be optimized to have the lowest particulate and harmful gas emissions possible.
There are many new green technologies and ship systems that we are pioneering, which makes this a very exciting project for us.
