More stop sign changes for Minot

MINOT – Four lanes, two lanes, all lanes, tracks. This can sometimes be confusing. More stop signs for Main Street and downtown Minot are in order.

Minot City Council voted Monday to change three downtown intersections from two-way stop checks to all-way stop checks.

The three intersections were Main Street South and First Avenue South, Main Street South and Third Avenue South, and First Street Southeast and Second Avenue Southeast.

“Each of these three intersections has problems with view obstruction due to limited setbacks from buildings, parked vehicles and roadway inclination, as well as anecdotal operation of false stops in all directions due to of the constrained and busy nature of the intersections,” city staff said in the downtown intersection traffic control memo.

The city also said in the memo that it is considering changing the intersections of First Street Southwest and Third Avenue Southwest, First Street East and Central Avenue East, and Second Street Southeast and Second Avenue Southeast.

“We looked at every intersection downtown, whether it’s a two-way stop or a four-way stop, whether we should change that or keep it,” the city engineer said. Traffic Stephen Joersz. “Three of them were already all-way stops, and I’m going to say that three of them were close to going from a two-way stop to an all-way stop. We think that ‘with a little more growth and a little more activity, they would reach that point of view.

Joersz said there has been an increase in pedestrian activity at First Street East and East Central Avenue, so for now the city plans to create a painted bump, which would shorten the crosswalk.

“The painted boss compared to the concrete boss, it’s a lot cheaper to do the painted boss,” Joersz said. “It’s more of a visual deterrent than a physical barrier. We are trying to improve security with this. We wanted to see how the painted bump would work. If it works well, so much the better. If we need to improve that and convert it to a full stop, we can definitely do that. »

“These city center intersections are very busy and there’s a lot going on,” Alderman Stephan Podrygula said. “It is not clear who is supposed to stop and who is not supposed to stop. I really appreciate that the traffic engineer followed this. »
