The master’s program will focus on skills essential to the semiconductor workforce
CHENNAI, India – Purdue University and the Indian Institute of Technology, Madras (IIT Madras) will soon launch a dual-degree master’s program in semiconductors under a recently signed agreement to cooperate in teaching and research in semiconductors and microelectronics.
The proposed dual degree program will be designed to develop skilled talent for the next generation of semiconductor workforce. It will emphasize an innovative and collaboratively developed curriculum to meet the growing needs of industry. Undergraduate students with strong academic qualifications and a deep interest in working on topics related to semiconductor devices, chip fabrication, and circuits and systems will be candidates for the future master’s program.
“Purdue University is home to more than 2,700 Indian students, and Purdue has a long and deep strategic partnership with India and IIT Madras in particular,” said Mung Chiang, Purdue president-elect and executive vice president for strategic initiatives. “We recently launched the first Semiconductor Degree Program (SDP) with the goal of becoming the leading source of skilled semiconductor talent in the United States. India.”
On November 3 at IIT Madras, the heads of the two institutions signed a letter of intent accepting the collaboration. V. Kamakoti, Director of IIT Madras and Professor of Computer Science and Engineering; Nagendra Krishnapura, Professor and Head of Department of Electrical Engineering, IIT Madras; and Raghunathan Rengaswamy, Dean of Global Engagement, represented IIT Madras. Representing Purdue were Mung Chiang; Dimitrios Perulis, Michael and Katherine Birck Chair and Reilly Professor of Electrical and Computer Engineering; Vijay Raghunathan, Professor of Electrical and Computer Engineering and Director of Semiconductor Education; and Arvind Raman, associate executive dean of Purdue’s College of Engineering.
“The India Semiconductor Mission focuses on the development and large-scale deployment of microelectronic products,” said V. Kamakoti. “This joint initiative with Purdue will certainly increase our quality human resource development efforts in semiconductor electronics.”
The partnership would also involve research collaboration in areas such as semiconductor supply chain management, chip design, packaging, system architecture and advanced manufacturing methods.
“The Elmore Family School of Electrical and Computer Engineering at Purdue University and the Department of Electrical Engineering at IIT Madras have forged particularly strong ties in many fields in the past,” said Dimitrios Peroulis, Director from school. “We are excited to join forces again to address common critical needs in semiconductors and microelectronics.”
Nagendra Krishnapura said the new dual degree will provide students with both knowledge and autonomy: “IIT Madras has a world-class faculty in the field of semiconductors, from electronic devices to circuits and systems. This new Semiconductor Dual Degree program will give students a solid foundation in these areas, while giving them the freedom and flexibility to specialize in their chosen area of interest. We also expect the program to open new avenues of research and teaching collaboration with Purdue University in these areas.
Underlining the importance of the collaboration between the two institutions, Vijay Raghunathan from Purdue added: “The global semiconductor industry is facing a huge talent shortage. Purdue and IIT Madras are implementing an innovative program to fill this gap by enhancing the best human and curricular resources and leveraging the complementary strengths of faculty at both institutions.
Other aspects of collaboration that have yet to be fully defined include the exchange of faculty and research scholars and collaborative research and discovery, learning and teaching, and engagement.
About IIT Madras
The Indian Institute of Technology Madras (IITM) was established in 1959 by the Government of India as an “Institute of National Importance”. The activities of the institute in various fields of science and technology are carried out in 16 university departments and several university centers for advanced interdisciplinary research. The institute offers undergraduate and postgraduate programs leading to BTech, MSc, MBA, MTech, MS and PhD degrees in a variety of specializations. The IITM is a residential institute with over 600 faculty and 9,500 students. Students from 18 countries are enrolled. The IITM encourages an active entrepreneurial culture with strong academic support and through the IITM incubation cell.
Recognized as an Institution of Eminence (IoE) in 2019, IITM was ranked #1 in the Global category for the fourth consecutive year in the Indian Ranking 2022 published by National Institutional Ranking Framework, Ministry of Education, Govt. from India. The institute was also ranked #1 in the Category Engineering Institutions in the same ranking for seven consecutive years – from 2016 to 2022. It was also declared the best innovative institution in the country in the Atal Ranking of Institutions on Achievements in Innovation (ARIIA) in 2019, 2020 and 2021.
