Prairie View A&M University offers students a new bachelor’s degree in African American studies

After 150 years, this Texas HBCU has expanded its student learning program.

Prairie View A&M University has launched a new opportunity for its students, offering participants the chance to earn a Bachelor of Arts in African American Studies through the institution’s new million-dollar initiative, Enhancing the Humanities at PVAMU.

Prairie View issued say it program is part of the president Ruth J. Simmons vision at historically black college or university (HBCU). The program prepares students to become emerging leaders through communication, critical thinking, and research. Students should be equipped with resources to enhance their approach to any field of work through a global cultural lens.

“Part of the HBCU experience for many students is a journey into self-identification, blackness, and trying to better understand the black experience,” said the director and associate professor at AAS. Jeanelle Hopedoctorate “This [African American Studies] provides students with the language needed to understand the world around them and an opportunity to engage with key theories, concepts, and methods that seek to make sense of the black experience and amplify our narratives.

The initiative would be funded in part by the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation, an anonymous contribution and a matching grant.

According to Prairie View A&M, the university is the second oldest public institution of higher learning in the state, offering bachelor’s, master’s, and doctoral programs that enable students to achieve excellence in teaching, research, and service.

The Texas Constitution designated the university as a “first class” institution, as students graduated to become leaders in the fields of education, agriculture, engineering, nursing , arts and sciences.

According The ChicagoTribunefaculty and student activists at San Francisco State University established the nation’s first black studies department in 1968. HBCUs, including Morehouse College, Spelman College, Howard University, and Florida A&M University is among the other institutions that offer AAS programs.
