Man Utd join Chelsea in race to sign Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang

Erik ten Hag is keen to strengthen his squad ahead of next week’s transfer deadline, with several areas unresolved despite the long three-month transfer window.

The Dutchman will have been delighted with his signings so far, however, with Tyrell Malacia, Lisandro Martinez and Christian Eriksen all featuring in the 2-1 win over Liverpool earlier this week.

He also added Casemiro to the squad and the Brazil international could make his debut against Southampton on Saturday after being named as a substitute.

United spent much of the summer chasing Barcelona midfielder Frenkie de Jong but were ultimately unsuccessful in that pursuit. Now it’s claimed another Catalan star has caught United’s attention.

According to Italian journalist Gianluca Di Marzio, United have now joined Chelsea in the race to sign striker Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang, who joined Barcelona in January.

According to the report, United have taken a new approach to signing the Gabon striker, with the club identifying the former Arsenal captain as a potential candidate to fill the void in attack.

Chelsea, who were also interested in De Jong, held lengthy negotiations with Barcelona over Aubameyang but failed to reach an agreement.

Blues boss Thomas Tuchel is said to be pushing for a deal to sign Aubameyang but as things stand no solution has been found and Aubameyang’s future is up in the air.

SN’s verdict…
It looks like United’s activity in the market may hinge on whether Cristiano Ronaldo stays at the club or not. The latest update on Ronaldo’s future has revealed that his agent, Jorge Mendes, is trying to arrange a move to Napoli.

United are also considering options in the final third after their third offer for Ajax winger Antony was turned down, with Old Trafford officials now debating whether they should drop the deal.

Aubameyang, 33, is another short-term solution to a long-term problem and United have long had to tackle this problem.

Should he join, he would succeed Ronaldo, Edinson Cavani and Odion Ighalo as United’s last three signings in that department.
