Magness road sign unveiled | Local news


Part of a highway through Rockwall County has been officially named in honor of the life of a local resident.

The Royse City Independent School District held a ceremony on October 29 to unveil the sign that will be erected for the David Magness Memorial Highway.

The Rockwall County Commissioners Court approved a resolution asking the Texas Senate and the Texas House of Representatives to rename the portion of State Highway 66 extending through Magness County. The resolution honored Magness, the late Rockwall County Commissioner, who passed away on December 3, 2020.

The measure was passed by both houses in the last session of the Texas Legislature.

County Judge David Sweet, County Commissioner Janet Nichol, State Senator Bob Hall, State Representative Justin Holland, Royse City ISD Superintendent Kevin Worthy, Royse City Mayor Clay Ellis , Rockwall Mayor Kevin Fowler, Fate Mayor David Billings and TxDOT District of Dallas attended the ceremony. Magness was a longtime Royse City resident and was known for a long and varied career in business and civic leadership.

Magness was a farmer and rancher in Rockwall, Hunt and Collin counties and owned a fertilizer and chemical distribution business before being first elected to Commissioners’ Tribunal in 2003. During his tenure he was chairman of the Rockwall County Road and Open Space consortia. , as the county representative on the District Transportation Council, the STAR Transit Board of Directors, and the North Texas Council of Governments. Magness was appointed to the Board of Directors of Farmers Electric Cooperative in 2003, as Chairman of the Board since 2010 and a member of the Board of Directors of the Farmers Electric Charitable Foundation since 2008.

Magness was a real estate agent at Upchurch Real Estate and United Country Real Estate and was a founding investor and chairman of the board of Texas Leadership Bank, now Guaranty Bank of Royse City.

Magness was a member of the ISD Royse City Board of Directors for 12 years and was a founding member and first president of the Royse City Rotary Club.

Magness has been a member of the Rockwall County Youth Fair Board, the Texas Farm Bureau, the Royse City Chamber of Commerce Board, and the Rockwall County Republican Men’s Club.
