Hyderabad: Starting this academic year, engineering students, especially those in conventional engineering courses like mechanics, civil, among others, will have the opportunity to opt for specialist or minor degrees in emerging technologies.
Speaking at a press conference held to reveal details of the Golden Jubilee celebrations at Jawaharlal Nehru Technological University, Hyderabad (JNTUH), Katta Narasimha Reddy, Vice Chancellor (VC) of JNTUH, a announced that the university would introduce honors / minor specialization in emerging fields / multidisciplinary fields in undergraduate degree courses to improve domain knowledge and employability in conventional streams.
A student from the same or another department will obtain the minimum additional credits in the order of 18 to 20 and will obtain a diploma with distinction or minor from the same or from another department.
“If a mechanical engineering student selects and takes prescribed courses in an” emerging field “namely” data science “under this program, the student will be awarded a B Tech degree in Mechanical Engineering (major) with a minor in ‘data science’, ”Reddy explained.
The university is also considering allowing B Tech students to take a break from their studies for up to two semesters, preferably within an academic year, to launch start-up companies and product development. Interruption of studies for serious health reasons is also authorized with the approval of the director of the college.
The vice-chancellor said that in addition to focusing on autonomous and affiliated colleges, introducing reforms in the assessment system and introducing new courses in emerging technologies, the university is also ensuring a balance between emerging and conventional courses offered by affiliated colleges.
The university will also implement a three-step process: directions to review applicants’ certificates upon faculty ratification and execution of an affidavit, review of certificates by university officials, and the creation of a special unit to manage the verification of diplomas in order to keep control over the faculty by using fake certificates.
