Ghana: UHAS awards honorary doctorate of science to Dr Agyepong


Ho – The University of Health and Allied Sciences (UHAS) last Saturday awarded an Honorary Doctor of Science degree to the Executive Chairman of the Jospong Group of Companies (JGC), Dr. Joseph SiawAgyepong.

He was honored in recognition of his outstanding contributions to environmental sanitation and higher education in Ghana and beyond.

UHAS Council President, Supreme Court Justice Victor JM Dotse and UHAS Vice Chancellor, Prof. John Owusu Gyapong together decorated DrAgyepong with honors during the second session of the 6th Congregation of the UHAS here in the Volta region.

Some 692 students received degrees in various academic disciplines at the event.

After receiving the honours, Dr. SiawAgyepong thanked God, emphasizing that he was very touched by the honor bestowed on him by the university.

“I would also like to thank the members of the UHAS board, my wife, Mrs. Adelaide Agyepong, my children, the management and staff of the Jospong Group of Companies and everyone who has invested in my life,” he said. .

He revealed that his group would set up a $100,000 scholarship program for research at UHAS.

A citation accompanying the honor read: “The University of Health and Allied Sciences is therefore proud to be associated with you and delighted to honor you this April 9, 2022, with the Honorary Doctor of Science (honoris) causa) for your excellent leadership; for your innovative business solutions that continue to add value to the daily lives of Ghanaians; for your service and care to countless communities across Africa, and for the integrity in which you walk as you represent us globally.”

He continued “your contributions to environmental sanitation and higher education in Ghana and beyond are unparalleled in scope and have been accurately described as ‘phenomenal’.

The citation further stated that over the years “your visionary leadership has brought us the Jospong Group of Companies, which has earned you worldwide recognition for job creation that has improved the incomes of thousands of households, which is the embodiment of the UHAS core values ​​of Excellence, Innovation, Integrity, Service and Care.”

Earlier, in a brief motivational speech, Dr. SiawAgyepong urged graduates to put God first in all their endeavors and chosen careers.

He told graduates to always take advantage of and cherish the opportunities they have and the ones that would come their way.

“Be ready to learn, explore and also teach others, emphasizing that ‘from today, look at things twice,’ he instructed the students.

An alumnus of the Royal Nungua Technical Institute in Accra, Dr Agyepong studied for the London City and Guilds Certificate, which he obtained in 1990, earning an Electrical Engineering Technician Certificate (Part II) .

He became managing director at the age of 25 and helped turn his mother’s notebook business into Jospong Printing Press in 1995. He proved to be a visionary leader with a remarkable knack for recognizing business opportunities and establish strategic partnerships to implement its vision.

In 2006, Dr. SiawAgyepong revolutionized waste management in Ghana with the introduction of Zoomlion Ghana Limited, now the country’s leading waste management company.

He is the founder and executive chairman of JGC with 60 subsidiaries, with a core staff of over 6,000, 55,000 agents and creating over 250,000 job opportunities for people of different ages, genders and cultures. .

He is currently president of the Environmental Service Providers Association (ESPA).
