As reported earlier today, Barcelona intend to sign a new midfielder in the upcoming January transfer window.
The Blaugrana are concerned about the recent performances of captain Sergio Busquets and want to sign a player who can provide cover and compete with the veteran before possibly replacing him.
Several names are on the radars of the Blaugrana, including Ibrahim Sangare of PSV Eindhoven. But the most linked player so far has been Wolves and Portugal midfielder Ruben Neves.
The 25-year-old Premier League midfielder has long been on Barca’s agenda. He was also linked with a move to Spotify Camp Nou during the last summer window, but the transfer didn’t materialize and he remained at Wolves.
However, he will enter the final year of his contract with the Midlands club next summer and has shown no indication of wanting to sign an extension.
Amidst this, his agent, Jorge Mendes, who has strong ties with Barcelona management, has reportedly already offered Neves to the Catalan club.
Now, Mundo Deportivo reports that the superagent could further help the Blaugrana to land Neves as early as the January transfer window, agreeing a loan-to-buy deal with Wolves.
The 25-year-old Portugal international is currently valued at €40m but the report says Mendes could help arrange a loan move to Barcelona in the winter window with a mandatory buy clause inserted for summer 2023 .
It is further claimed that Neves is keen on leaving Wolves and Mendes is trying to facilitate a move to Camp Nou, with Barcelona weighing the possibility of signing the former FC Porto star.
Barca signed Adama Traore on loan from Wolves last January but decided against signing him permanently, with the winger returning to Les Molineux. Unlike this operation, Neves’ deal could have a mandatory obligation for Barcelona to sign him permanently.
However, at this stage, it’s all speculation and it remains to be seen how the La Liga giants approach their plans for the winter window.
