Clarksville, TN – Austin Peay State University’s (APSU) bachelor’s degree programs in Computer Information Systems, Computer Information Technology, and Computer Science have been accredited by the Computing Accreditation Commission of ABET, the global accreditor for college programs and academics in applied and natural sciences, computer science, engineering, and engineering technology.
ABET accreditation ensures programs meet standards to produce graduates ready to enter critical technical fields that pave the way for innovation and emerging technologies, and anticipate public welfare and safety needs.
Sought after worldwide, ABET’s voluntary peer review process is highly respected as it adds critical value to academic programs in technical disciplines, where quality, accuracy and safety are of the utmost importance. .
“When we started offering these programs five years ago, our goal was to have them all ABET accredited as soon as possible,” said Dr. Nicholas Coleman, associate professor at CSIT and associate dean of the College of STEM. “It is the culmination of years of work by faculty and staff in the department as well as everyone else at Austin Peay who assisted in the accreditation process.”
Developed by technical professionals from ABET member companies, the ABET criteria focus on what students experience and learn. ABET credentialing reviews cover curriculum, faculty, facilities and institutional support and are conducted by teams of highly qualified professionals from industry, academia and government with expertise in ABET disciplines.
“Now, all three Bachelor of Science (BS) programs in CSIT’s APSU department (BS in Computer Information Systems, BS in Computer Information Technology, BS in Computer Science) are accredited by ABET,” Lee said. “APSU’s CSIT department is not only one of the largest computer science departments in the state of Tennessee, but also one of the very few computer science departments in Tennessee with three accredited computer science programs ABET. ABET accreditation allows us to offer high quality academic programs to our students and different IT program choices to students from different backgrounds.
