“We fabricate a large number of ponds to meet the water needs of the forces deployed there. In forward locations like the Daulat Beg Oldie (DBO), troops used fresh water from the ponds even during freezing winters this year”, quotes the ANI. Indian Army Chief Engineer Lt Gen Harpal Singh said.

Since April-May 2020, India has deployed more than 50,000 troops as well as a large number of new equipment to deal with any possible Chinese aggression in eastern Ladakh. The army has taken several measures to meet the logistical needs of the troops based in this region which experiences extreme cold during the winters.

“Water at surface level freezes during extreme winters, but below it remains in liquid form. Our troops have used the water from these ponds to meet their needs,” said the chief engineer of the Indian army.

As temperatures sometimes drop below minus 40 degrees, obtaining fresh water and food for the troops is a difficult task.

According to the army, an additional 22,000 habitats have been built for the troops in eastern Ladakh and can be moved from place to place.
