Aston Martin hopeful they can convince Vettel to sign contract renewal

Aston Martin’s new Formula 1 team principal Mike Krack says the team must show their potential in order to keep Sebastian Vettel beyond 2022.

Krack began his new role at Aston Martin last week after leaving his position at BMW as head of motorsport for the German manufacturer.

His appointment marks the first time in over a decade that Krack has worked in F1, previously chief engineer at BMW Sauber where he first raised a young Vettel when he was the team’s test and reserve driver. in 2006.

Four-time world champion Vettel’s current contract expires at the end of the season, and Krack knows what the Silverstone-based side need to do to persuade him to sign a new contract.

“It’s clear that a guy like Sebastian, a four-time world champion, doesn’t want to be 15th or 12th or P8,” Krack said as quoted by Motorsport.com. “It’s clear. It’s our task to deliver a performing car, or let’s say a performing structure, because I think Sebastian is a smart guy.

“So he won’t just focus on this year’s car or whatever, but will focus more on what’s going on and if he sees the potential in it.”

“So if we manage to offer him that, I think we have a chance to keep him for longer.

“To be honest with you, I haven’t spoken to him about it. It’s something that will have to come, obviously.

“But overall it’s our job to provide the right package and then Sebastian will stay and other riders would like to join us.”

Vettel joined Aston Martin last year after leaving Ferrari after six seasons, securing his only podium of 2021 in Baku.

Krack is clear the German is a huge asset to the team due to his 16 years of F1 experience.

“Let’s put it like this, Sebastian is first and foremost a very nice guy,” Krack said. “So he manages to surround the team around him, not by being nice all the time, but by being respectful. It is an ethic that I share, in large part. I think that’s also one of the reasons why we get along so well.

“But then, compared to the last time I knew him, he is now a four-time world champion, he has accumulated a huge amount of experience. And he is a smart guy.

“That’s also why he manages to combine that channeling experience in the right way, and doesn’t just say in the past I’ve had this or in the past I’ve had that, but he knows exactly what he’s got. need to go faster.

“So from that perspective it’s great to have him because he can also guide us as a team in our development.”

Krack admits he and Vettel share a “special bond” having worked together at BMW Sauber, and revealed the two have spoken to each other since he took over.

“When Sebastian first raced in Turkey in the third car, I was his race engineer,” Krack said. “So that obviously put maybe a bit of a special bond between him and me. Also, last week he said do you remember Istanbul? I think we have a very good relationship.

“We haven’t been in touch so much in the years since I left F1. But when we saw each other again, it was like we saw each other yesterday. So it was very, very good to catch up. .

“Now we have a lot of stories to share, not only about racing, but also about family, about children and stuff like that. But the discussions I have with him are always a continuation of what we have had in the past.

“So we were very, very close in the past, and I feel like we’re very close again now.”
