Aluminum Bahrain (Alba) yesterday signed a full turnkey contract with Mitsubishi Power, an energy solutions brand of Mitsubishi Heavy Industries, Ltd., and the SEPCO III consortium to expand Power Plant 5 in Alba, adding new gas 680.9 megawatt (MW) combined cycle. Under the terms of the contract, the Mitsubishi Power & SEPCO III consortium will be responsible for the design, engineering, procurement, construction and commissioning of a gas turbine power unit at 680.9 megawatt (MW) combined cycle. Mitsubishi Power will supply a combined cycle power plant, which includes an M701JAC gas turbine, an air-cooled version of the J-series gas turbines and a steam turbine.


To meet future global decarbonization needs, JAC gas turbines are capable of using up to 30% hydrogen by volume, reaching 100% hydrogen in the future with minimal modification of the existing infrastructure. Further adding, Shaikh Daij Bin Salman Bin Daij Al Khalifa said, “We are delighted to add a fourth block to Power Plant 5 to bring its output to over 2.4 gigawatts (GW).

Investing in an efficient gas turbine, our latest ambitious energy project, will accelerate our ESG transition and allow Alba to reduce its greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions as we adhere to Bahrain’s goals of reaching Net Zero by here 2060.
